5 Minutes Through Shanghai

Some cities announce themselves immediately. Shanghai seduces you slowly - then all at once.

Five minutes on a scooter through streets that flow like a river. The French Concession bleeding into the old town. Plane trees casting long shade over café terraces. The smell of something cooking somewhere, always. A city that has been cosmopolitan for so long it wears it without thinking.

Shanghai in summer is a particular thing. The heat is real — humid, enveloping, the kind that asks you to slow down. In return, the city gives you everything: sidewalk bars giving you courtside seats to everyday life, morning markets still cool from the night before, long dinners that begin at dusk and end somewhere you didn't expect.

It is a city for the curious, for the traveller who knows that the best version of any place is found not in the landmarks but in the hour between them.
